Today's Influence Ads: Former Cabinet Members Weigh In on National Debt

The new Coalition for Fiscal and National Security launched an ad blitz Wednesday, running an ad across the Hill papers calling on Congress to stabilize the national debt. The letter features a number of famous signatories, including former Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright, Henry Kissinger, James Baker and George Shultz, as well as former Defense Secretaries Robert Gates, Frank Carlucci and Harold Brown.

The Federal Postal Coalition also weighed in on fiscal cliff negotiations, noting that federal and postal service employees have already endured $103 billion in cuts to their wages and pensions. Family Enterprise USA put forth an ad aimed at protecting family businesses in the midst of dealmaking. CNBC chimed in with an ad emphasizing that falling off the fiscal cliff could sacrifice two million jobs. And the Service Employees International Union jumped into the discussion, warning that current deficit reduction plans put physician training programs at risk.

Huntington Ingalls Industries ran a new spot lauding the affordability and adaptability of its new warships, and Huawei promoted its commitment to women in the workforce. BASF Chemical Company highlighted the benefits of its wind turbine technology, and the American Veterinary Medical Association offered a support line for questions about animal welfare in a new ad.

Those with returning ads, per Kantar Media's Washington Eye, include AARP, America's Credit Unions and the Credit Union National Association, the American Bankers Association, the American Healthcare Association, the American Lung Association, the American Petroleum Institute, the American Society of Transplantation, Bell Helicopter and Boeing, BP, Business Roundtable, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, CTIA, Family Business Estate Tax Coalition, Hologic, the International Council of Shopping Centers, Kaiser Permanente, McDonald's, the National Beer Wholesalers Association, Southern Company, United Technologies, Wells Fargo and WTOP-Radio.
