Obama Winning Cliff PR Battle, According to New Poll
President Obama has the wind at his back in the fiscal cliff negotiations.
That's the case, at least, according to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll that shows the president's approval rating for handling the negotiations is significantly higher than House Speaker John Boehner's.
Forty-nine percent of respondents approve of Obama's approach compared to 25 percent who approve of Boehner's, highlighting the perception that the president holds leverage over House Republicans. Forty-two percent disapprove of the president's approach and 49 percent disapprove of the speaker's.
Working against Boehner is the fact that the public is mostly in the dark about the speaker's efforts, "underscoring a president’s greater ability to command the spotlight to make his case – and to draw more unified backing from his party’s core supporters," according to the poll.
Unlike the speaker, the president has taken his fiscal cliff pitch to the public. This week, he was in Michigan stumping for his proposal, and last week in Pennsylvania.
The poll was conducted Dec. 5-9 among 1,018 adults with a sampling error of 4 points.
