McCain on Lieberman: Hate That Guy!

Joe Lieberman, the sort-of-Democrat, sort-of-Republican senior senator from Connecticut, is a man who deserves the highest respect, Sen John McCain, R-Ariz., said Tuesday.

He would say that. From McCain's perspective, Lieberman showed great courage in supporting his failed bid for the White House instead of President Obama's. (Others have used other words to describe Lieberman's endorsement.)

"The greatest mark of respect is when Joe Lieberman supported me in 2008, and then when we formed up the Homeland Security Committee, he was made the chairman of it, kept chairman of it, by his Democratic peers. That’s a level of respect that very few people have obtained," McCain said.

That's one way to look at it.

Lieberman is retiring as soon as this endless congressional session ends. When initially asked to comment on Lieberman, McCain didn't miss a beat. "I hate him. He's a jerk," he joked.
