If you turn on your television tomorrow you may feel like you've entered a time warp taking you back to any day before Nov. 6, 2012.
That's because national cable networks will begin airing a campaign-season-style ad from Crossroads GPS attacking President Obama on the fiscal cliff. The ad, "Over," critictizes the president as not following through on a promise to offer a balanced plan to avert the cliff, and it's complete with eerie piano music, shots of regular folks and Obama soundbites.
"The time for politics is ending. We need bipartisan ideas we can all support. Call President Obama and tell him it's time to show us a balanced plan," the voiceover states.
Crossroads GPS spent $500,000 on the ad buy, with the spot running on CNN, CNBC, Fox News Channel, Fox Business Channel, Headline News and MSNBC, as well as D.C.-area channels during Sunday talks shows.
Notably, the ad doesn't allude to House Speaker John Boehner's counter-offer. A conservatives backlash has been brewing against that plan, which offers up $800 billion in revenue. But a Crossroads GPS release about the new Obama ad does mention the Republican offer and criticizes the White House for "immediately slapp[ing it] down."
"President Obama's idea of a balanced plan is that we pay more and government gets to spend more,” Crossroads GPS president and CEO Steven Law said in a statement. “The White House has shown it is not serious about the debt, as it has yet to propose significant spending cuts to go along with its massive proposed tax hikes. Serious revenue concessions have been made, but Obama won't take yes for an answer."
The White House has been using campaign-style tactics of its own around the fiscal cliff, and it appears to be winning the messaging war. That has spurred House Republicans to call in the K Street big guns for help. Now it appears outside groups are entering the fray.
