Flags at the U.S. Capitol will be flown at half staff to honor the victims of today's Connecticut shooting.

House Speaker John Boehner ordered the flags to be lowered this afternoon after the shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., Boehner chief of staff Mike Sommers tweeted this afternoon.

“The horror of this day seems so unbearable, but we will lock arms and unite as citizens, for that is how Americans rise above unspeakable evil," Boehner said in a statement.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi also issued a statement, saying, "The entire nation will continue to stand as a source of support to this community in the days and weeks to come."
