Rep. Vern Buchanan says the Justice Department has closed its investigation into allegations that he violated campaign finance laws and the department will not bring charges.
DOJ's Jack Smith told Buchanan's lawyers on Tuesday, according to the Florida Republican's office. Smith could not immediately be reached Tuesday night.
Buchanan, who serves as finance chairman for the National Republican Congressional Committee, remains a focus of a House Ethics Committee investigation into the same matter, which involves allegations that he improperly reimbursed contributors to his campaigns $67,900 from his former chain of auto dealerships.
But the Justice Department's decision Tuesday means that at least two federal inquiries into those issues have now been closed with no charges.
