DeMint and Santorum Support Akin

FILE - In this May 17, 2011 file photo, Rep. Todd Akin, R-Mo., announces his candidacy for U.S. Senate, in Creve Coeur, Mo. Democrats have their thumbs heavily on Republican scales in Senate primaries in Missouri and Wisconsin this summer, hoping to tip the balance and improve their own chances of maintaining a majority in November. The idea isn't as far-fetched as it might sound.

Tea party standard-bearer Sen. Jim DeMint and conservative leader former Sen. Rick Santorum backed Rep. Todd Akin on Wednesday in his campaign to defeat Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill.

DeMint and Santorum said that winning the Missouri seat is key to a Republican take-over of the Senate.

"If Republicans are to win back the Senate and stop President Obama's liberal agenda, we must defeat Senator Claire McCaskill in Missouri. Her support of President Obama's job-killing, big-spending policies are sending our country into an economic abyss," they wrote in a Facebook post

Akin has been in trouble in the polls since his controversial comments about rape earlier this summer. The National Republican Senatorial Committee and American Crossroads canceled advertising campaigns and the GOP, reports National Journal, is investigating other routes to victory in the Senate.

But now conservative reinforcements are coming to Akin's aid: the Senate Conservatives Fund, the super PAC DeMint founded, is considering helping with fundraising, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich campaigned for the congressman and Sen. Roy Blunt changed his mind and is now pulling for Akin.
