Arnold Palmer Presented with Congressional Gold Medal

Even golf pro Arnold Palmer knows it's noteworthy when the House and the Senate can agree on something.

He congratulated the chambers for coming together in his acceptance of the Congressional Gold Medal Wednesday. Speaker John Boehner, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell joined several other lawmakers to award Palmer the legislature's highest honor for his talent in golf and his generosity.

Each of them talked about experiences with golf and thanked Palmer for establishing hospitals and treatment centers across the country. Rep. Joe Baca, D-Calif, shared a memory of playing a round with the golf legend -- prompting Palmer to give him a little advice on his game.

"You have to be careful about the strokes you're giving," he said, looking at Baca. "Pull back, just a little."

Golf enthusiast Boehner recalled meeting Palmer on the practice green at Pebble Beach. The two reminisced there about their fathers.

"Arnie and I looked at each other and gave each other a big bear hug and cried our eyes out. A picture I've never forgotten," Boehner said, tearing up again Wednesday in remembering the moment.
