Golfing For Charity At GOP Convention

Republican National Convention attendees weary of the hubbub in Tampa can hit the golf course to support the troops at the annual "Birdies for the Brave" charity golf event on Aug. 27.

Past events have raised over $1 million for the armed forces, according to a release. House Speaker John Boehner and Republican Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell are honorary co-chairmen of the event, which is sponsored by the PGA Tour, the Intel Corporation and the software firm SAP.

North Carolina has its fair share of golf greens, but Democratic revelers in Charlotte won't have the same reprieve this year.

"'Birdies for the Brave' is only at the RNC this year," spokeswoman Lisa Chapman told the Alley in an email. "Tampa is home to a large military community and the event's leadership really wanted to focus on helping returning service members from Iraq and Afghanistan."
