Dems. Toast To McGovern

Heavy-hitter democrats came out of the woodwork Thursday night to pay homage to former senator and presidential nominee George McGovern at his 90th birthday party.

My colleague John Aloysius Farrell, who penned this recap of the night and McGovern's legacy, was on the scene last night. He reports that McGovern's buddy, Bob Dole, didn't show up, although he was expected. But the crowd was large, many homages were paid, and there was a big, colorful birthday cake from Baltimore's Charm City Cakes.

Those who did show up include House Leader Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, Reps. Barney Frank and Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, Iowa Senator Tom Harkin and Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy.

Vicki Kennedy, wife of the late Sen. Ted Kennedy was also there, as was former agriculture secretary Dan Glickman and lobbyists Gerry Cassidy and Jack Quinn.

The 90th birthday party, held at the Newseum, was hosted by the World Food Program USA. McGovern has been active in working on hunger issues, and, along with Dole, won the 2008 World Food Prize.
