Today's Influence Ads: Group Hits Unions Over Wisconsin Recall

June 7, 2012
Groups opposed to unions and union leaders are using the failed effort to recall Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker as fuel for their arguments. The Center for Union Facts has a new ad, part of its multi-million dollar effort to support the Employee Rights Act, attacking union leaders for spending so much on the recall, according to a compilation of print influence ads by Kantar Media's Campaign Media Analysis Group. "Union leaders are angry that they failed at another election," the ad says. "Union members should be angry that their highjacked dues money was wasted."

And the American Future Fund has a new ad making fun of how President Obama did not actively campaign for Walker's Democratic challenger. The ad comes in the form of a spoof letter from "Obama" to Wisconsin voters and union leaders, apologizing for not coming to Wisconsin. "I was going to come on Monday, but my alarm didn't go off," the ad says. "I wanted to drop by last week when I was nearby in Minnesota and Illinois, but Sarah Jessica Parker called me and I completely lost track of time."

As today's Washington Eye shows, the Coca-Cola Company, Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, Share Our Strength and Union Pacific also have new ads.

Others with ads today are the American Beverage Association, American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, Finmeccanica, Goldman Sachs, the Independent Pilots Association, Lockheed Martin, Meads International, Neustar, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, TriWest Healthcare Alliance, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, United Egg Producers/Humane Society of the United States, United Healthcare, WTOP and a group of organizations calling for the repeal of the medical device tax.
