Chris Frates On Power, People And Influence From Capitol Hill To K Street

Polsinelli Shughart Hires Two Dutko Alums, and More People News

National Journal members have full access to this week's magazine's People section, but for those of you who don't get it, here's a taste of what you're missing.

Jonathan Traub, the former staff director for the House Ways and Means Committee, joined Deloitte's Washington national tax practice as a principal. As our colleague Christopher Snow Hopkins reports, Traub needed a break from the Hill following last year's debt-ceiling debates and super committee. "I was really burned out," he said. "For me, the super committee was a turning point."

Two Dutko Grayling alums - Andy Wright and Tracy Hammond - are joining Polsinelli Shughart. Wright, who formerly worked on the Hill as chief of staff to Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., was a managing principal at Dutko and joins the new firm as a shareholder. Hammond, who spent over a decade at Dutko, comes on as a senior policy adviser.

And Mike Tuffin, the former executive vice president of America's Health Insurance Plans who is now at APCO Worldwide, tells NJ that health care costs are "the most pressing issue facing our generation."

Other news in the People section include conservationist and civil-rights activist Pearlie Reed retiring from the Agriculture Department; Kevin Carey becoming the new director of the Education Policy Program at the New American Foundation; and Terence Healy being named partner in the global regulatory enforcement practice at Reed Smith.
