The Political Price of Ponies

Ahead of tomorrow's Kentucky Derby, the Sunlight Foundation takes a look at the millions spent in political contributions and on lobbying by the horse racing industry -- and at some of the industry's top political spenders.

Among the report's findings: Industry interests have given more than $8.7 million in political contributions since 1989 and ponied up $2.2 million in lobbying. The top recipient of the campaign contributions? Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the home of tomorrow's race.
