Former Rep. Mark Schauer is getting his campaign team in place as he prepares to launch a gubernatorial bid in the coming weeks. A Michigan Democratic operative told Hotline Tuesday that Schauer will tap BJ Neidhardt to manage his campaign, reprising his role from Schauer's 2008 congressional bid.
Neidhardt will join his wife in running a statewide campaign in Michigan: Julie Petrick was announced Monday as the campaign manager for Rep. Gary Peters' Senate bid. In 2012, Neidhardt worked on the congressional campaigns of Val Demings and then-Rep. Betty Sutton, both of whom lost narrowly to incumbents.
Another former Schauer staffer will serve as his communications director. Progress Michigan executive director Zack Pohl was Schauer's press secretary and campaign communications director. Schauer's official announcement, the source said, is a "couple weeks away."
Schauer served one term, beating GOP Rep. Tim Walberg in 2008, but Walberg returned to oust Schauer in 2010.
