Ohio Democratic operatives confirmed Friday that Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald will announce his candidacy for governor next Wednesday, April 24, in Cleveland. He will also make stops in Columbus and other cities that day.
One source said the announcement will come at midday Wednesday. The Cleveland Plain Dealer originally reported FitzGerald's announcement plans.
The move comes as no surprise. FitzGerald has not made a secret of his ambitions, and he has been actively politicking in Democratic circles. He formed a campaign committee in March as he prepared for the race.
Recent polling showed Gov. John Kasich leading FitzGerald in a potential election matchup, but that may be a product of FitzGerald's lack of statewide name recognition. One other Democratic possibility is Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Richard Cordray -- who is awaiting confirmation to his post after being renominated by President Obama -- but Ohio Democratic leaders say the party will try to avoid a primary.
