Cuccinelli's Soft First Ad

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli will launch his first paid television advertisement on Monday, his campaign said this morning. Campaign spokeswoman Anna Nix refused to discuss the amount of money Cuccinelli is putting behind the ad, or for how long it will run.

The ad stars Cuccinelli's wife Teiro Cuccinelli, complimenting her husband for "standing up for the vulnerable and those in need.” That’s a pretty soft image for a candidate best known as a conservative firebrand.

The candidate himself doesn’t utter a word throughout the ad – even to say he approves the message. That’s because of a quirk in state elections code that allows a candidate to avoid the approval statement if he or she doesn’t mention the opposing candidate.
