Kinder, Steelman Join Field Vying To Replace Emerson
The field of Republicans vying to replace Missouri Rep. Jo Ann Emerson is taking shape, with several bigger-name contenders announcing bids. The Republicans and Democratic candidates in the heavily GOP 8th District will not be chosen by primary, but rather by 8th District party committees.
Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, state GOP executive director Lloyd Smith, and former Treasurer and 2010 Senate candidate Sarah Steelman are all seeking to be nominated. Kinder and Smith have been considered the strongest potential candidates -- the longtime friends each worked for the late Rep. Bill Emerson years ago.
Smith announced at the end of December that he would seek the nomination. Steelman sent committee members an email on Wednesday making her case, the Southeast Missourian reported. And PoliticMO reported Wednesday that Kinder was also in the process of making his case to committee members, meeting with them individually and sending them a letter that touts his record of "real conservative change."
Whichever Republican wins the support of the committee will be the heavy favorite to win the general election, given the district's red hue.
