Robin Kelly Joins Race for Jackson Seat

Add another name to the ever-growing field of Democrats running in the special election to replace former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.: Former state Rep. Robin Kelly.

Kelly announced her candidacy for Illinois's Second District on Sunday. "I feel like I've been training for this job for 20 years," she told the Chicago Sun-Times. "I've worked on every level of government, from municipal to the county and to the state, and I feel like my qualifications, my education, my experience have greatly prepared me for this job."

Kelly served as chief of staff to former Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias and unsuccessfully ran for Treasurer when he made an unsuccessful Senate bid in 2010.

The primary will take place February 26, and the general election will be April 9.

The other Democratic candidates who've joined the race so far: State Sen. Toi Hutchinson, former Rep. Debbie Halvorson, state Sen.-elect Napoleon Harris, Alderman Anthony Beale, state Sen. Donne Trotter, and former Rep. Mel Reynolds.
