The Cuomo Advantage

October 19, 2012
On Thursday, Cuomo appeared on WGDJ-AM, a radio station in Albany, and confirmed the Obama campaign has asked him to serve as a surrogate. The Obama campaign told media outlets that inquired that Cuomo's schedule hasn't been nailed down. But the very fact that he will serve as a surrogate was newsworthy enough to earn clips in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Village Voice, the New York Daily News, the New York Observer, the Waterbury Republican American, New York Magazine and the Westchester Journal-News (and then we stopped counting). Breaking! Democratic politician stumps for Democratic presidential candidate! Only one other potential 2016 contender gets the same kind of breathless attention Cuomo earns: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. O'Malley, Klobuchar, Warner and the rest can only watch in envy. "I'll do whatever they ask me to do, but I don't want to step over a line that could fuel speculation of 'Well, Cuomo's looking to run in 2016,'" Cuomo said in the interview on WGDJ. Too late, Andy. Too late.
