Sherrod Brown Raises Big, Spends Big in Third Quarter

Updated at 2:59 p.m.

Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, raised big and spent even bigger during the third quarter.

According to a report filed with the Federal Election Committee, Brown brought in a hefty $5.4 million -- outpacing GOP Treasurer Josh Mandel, who raised $4.5 million -- but the senator spent close to $7 million in his reelection bid.

Brown has been heavily targeted by GOP outside groups: In a fundraising solicitation sent today, his campaign said outside groups had surpassed $23 million in spending against him.

Brown finished September with nearly $4.9 million on hand for the home stretch.

Mandel similarly spent more than he raised this quarter: His FEC report shows nearly $5 million spent, and about $4.4 million on hand at the close of September.

Most recent polls show Brown leading Mandel.
