Poll: Baldwin Holds Slight Lead in Wisconsin

Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin edges former Gov. Tommy Thompson in a new poll of Wisconsin's Senate race, holding a 4-point lead over the Republican.

Baldwin has 49 percent support to Thompson's 45 percent support in the NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll. Their mid-September poll showed Baldwin with a narrower lead, at 48 percent to 46 percent.

A Marquette University Law School poll released Wednesday showed a neck-and-neck race, with Thompson leading Baldwin 46 percent to 45 percent. A Baldwin internal also released yesterday had her leading, 48 percent to 44 percent.

The new poll shows Baldwin winning among independents, 48 percent to 37 percent.

The poll also shows President Obama leading Mitt Romney, 51 percent to 45 percent. The poll was conducted partly before Tuesday's debate and partly after. Wisconsin's Senate race is expected to be among the closest in the nation, and outside groups are pummeling both candidates over the airwaves. Thompson just told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel he put $850,000 of his own money into the contest for the final stretch. The NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll was conducted Oct. 15-17, surveying 1,013 likely voters. The margin of error is plus-or-minus 3.1 percentage points.
