House Majority PAC Goes After DesJarlais

In a sign that Democrats think Rep. Scott DesJarlais, R-Tenn., could be vulnerable after a revelation that he had an affair with a patient and urged her to get an abortion, House Majority PAC announced their first ad buy in Tennessee's 4th District.

The commercial hits directly at the controversy.

"Trust and faith," says the ad's announcer. "As a doctor, Scott DesJarlais earned his patients' trust."

It then cuts to news reports of Desjarlais' actons: First a clip explaining what had happened, then one noting that his office didn't "fight any accusations," and noting that some constituents thought it made the pro-life congressman "a total hypocrite."

The spot, called "Trust," starts airing this evening and will run for a week in Nashville and Chattanooga. The buy size is more than $100,000.

Earlier this week, the congressman's opponent, Democratic state Sen. Eric Stewart, released an internal poll showing him down just 5 points (Desjarlais was previously heavily favored to win reelection). DesJarlais released an ad of his own earlier this week, though it did not address the controversy.
