DCCC Scales Back Chicago TV Buy

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is cutting $740,000 -- 1,000 points -- from a Chicago television buy for the week of Oct. 23-29, according to a Democrat tracking media buys. The cancellation still leaves the DCCC with a $297,000 Chicago buy for the week.

The money could have been directed towards races in Illinois's 8th, 10th, and 11th Districts. In the 8th, Democrat Tammy Duckworth is running against GOP Rep. Joe Walsh. In the 10th, GOP Rep. Robert Dold is being challenged by Democrat Brad Schneider. And in the 11th, GOP Rep. Judy Biggert is facing former Democratic Rep. Bill Foster.

Duckworth is favored against Walsh, whereas operatives on both sides characterize the 10th and 11th as more competitive.

House Majority PAC, the Democratic-aligned super PAC, released three new TV ads on Monday as part of $2.4 million in spending in Chicago. One ad ties Dold and Biggert with Walsh, using video of Walsh at town hall meetings, while two later spots go after Dold and Biggert individually. The DCCC and House Majority PAC have layered their ad buys in a number of districts this fall; recently, the DCCC cancelled time in West Palm Beach, Fla. against GOP Rep. Allen West as House Majority PAC began going on the air with an ad campaign totaling $1.5 million. The Chicago media market is an expensive one, and the $740,000 will go a lot further in other, less pricey districts.
