Apparently, you shouldn't count anyone else's chickens before they hatch, either. That's the message in the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's big September fundraising numbers.
The DCCC brought in $15.3 million in September, outraising the National Republican Congressional Committee ($12.4 million) by nearly $3 million last month. The NRCC touted its record September fundraising last week and tweaked the DCCC for not yet releasing its numbers at the same time as it was canceling some big TV reservations. For the whole third quarter, the DCCC raised $35.1 million -- a record quarter, the committee said -- to the NRCC's $30.9 million.
The DCCC also narrowed the NRCC's cash on hand advantage during September: Going into the campaign's stretch run, the NRCC had $29.5 million in the bank, while the DCCC had $26.4 million, compared to a nearly $10 million GOP cash advantage at the end of August.
However, part of the reason Democrats closed that gap was that the NRCC spent about $20 million in September while carrying the Republican independent expenditure effort. From the time that the committees aired their first TV ads in mid-August through the end of September, the NRCC accounted for about $17.8 million of $29.4 million in advertising-related spending by GOP outside groups, according to a review of filings with the Federal Elections Commission.
Now, after recent major October reservations by Crossroads GPS ($8.1 million), Americans for Tax Reform (nearly $6 million), and American Action Network and the Congressional Leadership Fund (about $13.5 million), the NRCC will have significantly more outside help for the final sprint than it did last month. But the DCCC's grassroots-fueled fundraising is helping Democrats keep up in the money war.
