Berman, Sherman Nearly Come to Blows at Debate

The vice presidential debate wasn't the only heated one last night. California Democratic Reps. Howard Berman and Brad Sherman, competing in a member-member general election, nearly got into a fight during a forum.

Check out the video here. Here's the Los Angeles Times:

Video of the event in Woodland Hills shows the candidates exchanging words and Sherman at one point putting his arm around Berman, saying: "Do you want to get into this?"

A uniformed officer then came onto the stage and appeared to ask that they move away from each other.

The race is one of the nastiest House races in the country, as well as one of the most expensive.

The race is one of just three this fall that pits incumbent House members of the same party against each other. Sherman and Berman advanced over several Republican challengers in California's top-two primary in June, and the two have spent millions of dollars itemizing their personal and policy differences. Berman, the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has focused more on his ability to get things done in Washington, while Sherman - who currently represents more of the newly drawn district - has emphasized constituent service.

Recently, Berman was endorsed by the majority of the California delegation's Republican members, though Sherman also draws on a bevy of local Republican support as both men try to appeal across party lines for the general election.
