9/11 Attacks Front and Center in Wisconsin Senate Race

Suddenly, the 9/11 attacks are the focus of one of the nation's closest Senate races.

Yesterday, former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson released a tough ad ad attacking Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin for voting against a bill "to honor the victims of 9/11." The ad cast her as having an "extreme, far-left approach."

The vote in question is a 2006 resolution commemorating the anniversary but also applauded the Patriot Act, which Baldwin opposed. Baldwin's camp defended her record on 9/11 and called the ad "desperate," "disgusting," and "dishonest."

And today, Baldwin's campaign struck back with a 9/11 ad of their own, defending her record and accusing Thompson of profiting off the attacks:

"Tommy Thompson's ad is a disgrace," says the commercial's narrator. "The truth: Time and again, Tammy Baldwin has supported honoring victims of 9/11. And Tommy Thompson? He got a government contract to provide health care to 9/11 first responders. But Tommy took advantage, leaving them without the care they were promised. Tommy Thompson, personally, made over $3 million off the deal." Baldwin and Thompson are locked in a tight battle for Wisconsin Senate.
