Poll: Kaine, Allen in Dead Heat

A new poll shows -- yet again -- a dead heat between Democrat Tim Kaine and Republican George Allen in the Virginia Senate race.

In a NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist survey , both candidates receive 46 percent support, with 8 percent of voters undecided.

In the most recent NBC News/Marist survey, conducted in May, Kaine led Allen 49 percent to 43 percent. But recently, poll after poll has shown the race in Virginia to be a dead heat.

The survey shows President Obama ahead of Mitt Romney in the state, leading 49 percent to 44 percent.

Kaine is underperforming among non-white voters in the poll: While Obama has the support of 77 percent of non-white voters, Kaine is bringing in 67 percent of non-white voter support. Among white voters, the two Democrats have nearly identical support: Kaine has 38 percent compared to Obama's 39 percent. The NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll was conducted Sept. 9 - 11 and surveyed 996 likely voters, for a margin of error of plus-or-minus 3.1 percentage points.
