Poll: Brown Leads Mandel by Double Digits

A new poll shows Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, with a double-digit lead over GOP Treasurer Josh Mandel -- a bigger lead than other recent polls have shown in the race.

The Washington Post poll is the second survey released in two days to show Brown breaking 50 percent against his opponent. Brown leads Mandel by 12 points: 53 percent to 41 percent.

A poll released Monday, conducted for the Ohio Newspaper Organization, had put Brown's lead at 52 percent to 45 percent.

President Obama leads Mitt Romney 52 percent to 44 percent in the Post survey. It's a slightly bigger lead than the 51 percent to 46 percent he had in the Ohio Newspaper Organization poll Monday.

As we noted Monday, Brown's lead is despite over $18 million in outside spending aimed at defeating him -- which continues, with Crossroads GPS launching a new television ad targeting Brown today. The Washington Post poll of the Senate race was conducted Sept. 19-23. It surveyed 759 likely voters and has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4.5 percentage points.
