Mike Rounds Forming 2014 Exploratory Committee

Former GOP South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds is forming an exploratory committee for a 2014 bid challenging Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson.

"I do have an interest in looking at the 2014 Senate race in South Dakota," Rounds said Thursday, according to the Sioux Falls Argus Leader.

At the Union County Republicans Lincoln Day dinner, Rounds told KCAU TV that he was putting together the committee in the next month but wouldn't announce his decision on a run until after the November 6 elections.

"I'm tired of having a federal government that doesn't understand that 'profit' is not a dirty word," Rounds said at the event. "And I'm tired of a federal government that can't balance their own budget."

A Johnson staffer told KCAU that it was too early for a the senator to make a decision on running for reelection. Johnson has served in the Senate since 1997. The South Dakota seat is considered one of the best potential GOP pickup opportunities in 2014.
