Gingrich Fundraising for Akin Next Week

This should further dwindle whatever hope Republicans have left that Missouri GOP Senate nominee Todd Akin may still drop out of the race by the September 25 deadline: Newt Gingrich is attending a fundraiser for him on Monday.

That would be September 24, just one day before the absolute last day Akin can get off the ballot -- since his August comments that "legitimate" rape rarely causes pregnancy, he has been heavily pressured by Republicans to withdraw from the Senate race, where he faces Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill.

At a Tuesday evening "Women Standing with Todd Akin" event held by the congressman's campaign, conservative activist Phyllis Schlafly announced that Gingrich would be traveling to St. Louis for a $500-a-plate Akin fundraiser, the St. Louis Beacon reported. Rick Tyler, now an adviser to Akin, worked on Gingrich's presidential campaign.
