Carmona Internal Poll Shows Dead Heat in Arizona

A poll conducted for Richard Carmona's Arizona Senate campaign shows the Democrat in a dead heat with GOP Rep. Jeff Flake, in a race where the Republican is generally considered the favorite.

Flake leads Carmona 44 percent to 43 percent, according to the poll, conducted by Democratic polling firm Anzalone Liszt Research. Libertarian candidate Marc Victor has 3 percent support.

There haven't been any other recent live caller surveys of the race. In the previous Anzalone Liszt Research poll conducted for Carmona's campaign back in June, Flake led the former U.S. Surgeon General 43 percent to 39 percent.

The survey shows 34 percent of voters have a favorable view of Carmona, while 15 percent see him unfavorably. Flake, after a primary fight with self-funding businessman Wil Cardon, is viewed favorably by 38 percent of respondents but unfavorably by 32 percent. The poll shows Carmona with a big lead among Hispanic voters: 61 percent to Flake's 20 percent.

Both candidates are now on air with attack ads. Carmona is hitting Flake on veterans issues, and Flake is tying Carmona to President Obama and his health care law.

Carmona has been a highly-touted Democratic recruit, but the fundamentals of the state favor Flake: Arizona leans Republican, and Mitt Romney is expected to easily win the presidential race there this year. The Anzalone Liszt Research poll was conducted Sept. 18-23, surveying 600 likely voters and including bilingual interviews with Hispanic voters. The margin of error is plus-or-minus 4 percentage points.
