Candidates With a Newfound Love for Debating

September 24, 2012
So how many contests did these debate advocates attend during the primaries? For Mack, Lingle and Kyrillos, the answer is zero. Hoekstra participated in one televised debate, a 30-minute affair days before the primary, and McMahon debated former Rep. Chris Shays twice. Shays had pushed McMahon for more debates and Hoekstra primary rival Clark Durant appealed for more, longer debates. Lingle ignored former Hawaii Republican Party chair John Carroll's calls for multiple debates, and Kyrillos earned the moniker "chicken" from Bader Qarmout for avoiding his debate challenges. Mack, citing his large lead in the polls, skipped all of the scheduled GOP primary debates. CLARIFICATION: Hoesktra participated in multiple primary debates and forums with Durant, but only one of them was televised.
