Tommy Thompson Proves His Push-ups Claim

Some (okay, we) may have doubted him -- but 70-year-old Tommy Thompson proved that he can do 50 push-ups.

The Wisconsin Senate candidate and former governor has frequently boasted about his energy and fitness on the campaign trail.

But during a visit with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's editorial board, Thompson showed he can do more than talk: He dropped and gave them 50 (check out the video).

The Journal Sentinel:

Thompson loosened his tie, took off his suit coat, emptied his pockets and slipped off his shoes. Then he braced his feet against the wall - admittedly a bit of a crutch - and ripped off 50 push-ups in under a minute.

Thompson said he has been doing lengthy sets of push-ups ever since hearing they were the core of former NFL running back Emmitt Smith's fitness routine.

Thompson also walks a lot; his goal is 10,000 steps a day. He offered one other conditioning tidbit. "I do 100 sit-ups in the morning. I do my push-ups and then I do my sit-ups."

Thompson said he was aware his age could concern some voters, and he wanted to "show people, you know, that I'm pretty fit."
