Scott Walker Talks Trash Against Tammy Baldwin

TAMPA, Fla. -- Nearly three months removed from winning a hard-fought recall election that placed Wisconsin in the national spotlight, Republican Gov. Scott Walker eagerly waded into another hotly-contested campaign on Tuesday: the U.S. Senate race between Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin and former Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson.

This time around, however, Walker sounded content with the role of analyst rather than participant.

"Listen, she is an extreme liberal," Walker told Hotline On Call when asked to handicap the race. Walker repeated the "extreme liberal" label several times while noting Baldwin's voting record in the House. "National Journal puts her further left than even the former Speaker," he said, referencing House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

Walker then reduced the race to the simplest terms possible, drawing a contrast Republicans will seek to replicate throughout the fall campaign. "In our state, you're looking at the difference between an extreme liberal from Madison and a proven reformer," Walker said, pausing before adding: "Our guy's gonna win."

Walker, whose controversial anti-union policies made him a conservative icon -- and elicited an avalanche of outside money for his winning recall campaign -- received a hero's welcome on the convention floor here Tuesday evening. When the roll call vote reached Wisconsin, Walker stood to announce his name and state -- and the Tampa Bay Times Forum exploded into an extended standing ovation that lasted nearly a minute.
