Adams was the first member of her 87-person GOP class to lose her bid for reelection. With her departure the class lost a tea party stalwart that the New York Times once dubbed the "toughest freshman." But Adams noted that just because she lost in the primary, nobody should look at it as a sign that the freshman influence is waning. It's not, after all, like she lost to a Democrat. "This isn't anything bad for the freshman class or the tea party because he ended up having the same message that we all have," she said. Like most members leaving Congress, Adams described her two years as an "honor," but that didn't mean that it was without lows. After getting her version of the Violence Against Women Act through the House, she said it was incredibly frustrating to have it stall in the Senate. "The Senate shouldn't be using something that important as a political tool and leave it sitting on the table," she said. "We should be discussing policy not politics." It should be noted, of course, that the Senate also had a version of VAWA, one that included provisions to protect women on American Indian Reservations and same-sex couples. But that's not to say that the 112th Congress wasn't marred by politics. "It's frustrating to feel like the Senate Democrat leadership would not engage and the president would not engage to face the issues facing our great country," Adams said. "The reality of it is we've worked hard to come up with a responsible budget, the president had an opportunity to present a responsible budget, and he never did." But in Adams's view, regardless of what the reality is, it will get warped for the American public in an election year. "We've had four straight years of high unemployment with debt growing every minute," she said. "That's the reality of Obama and his lack of leadership. That's the reality we need to make sure doesn't get skewed by any of his fancy advertising." So what's the one lesson she has for Mitt Romney as he tries to beat Obama in November? "Don't let him out-raise you," she said.
