Polls: Mourdock, Donnelly Tied in Indiana Senate

Two polls released Thursday confirm the Indiana Senate race is a dead heat, with Democratic Rep. Joe Donnelly and Republican Treasurer Richard Mourdock separated by just two points in both outside group surveys.

In a Democratic poll conducted for Majority PAC and Center Forward, Donnelly led with 45 percent to Mourdock's 43 percent (for more on that poll, see today's Hotline Sort).

And a poll released Thursday by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce shows the two in an equally tight race, with Mourdock at 41 percent to Donnelly's 39 percent. Seventeen percent of respondents are undecided.

The state Chamber of Commerce endorsed Sen. Dick Lugar in his GOP primary with Mourdock, but has not endorsed the Treasurer since his primary victory.

A Donnelly internal poll released last week also showed a tight race, with the congressman leading by one point. Indiana is considered a tough state for Democrats running statewide this year, with Mitt Romney expected to beat President Obama there (the same chamber poll has GOP gubernatorial nominee Mike Pence (R) leading his Democratic opponent John Gregg 50 percent to 32 percent). But the recent polls show that the Senate race is a real contest. The Chamber poll of 600 registered voters statewide was conducted by Market Research Insight from August 6-9, surveying 600 registered voters. The poll has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4 percentage points.
