Hoekstra Leads Mich. Primary

Former Rep. Pete Hoekstra is in good position going into next Tuesday's Michigan GOP Senate primary despite his opponent Clark Durant's big push over the past weeks.

An EPIC-MRA poll released Tuesday shows Hoekstra cruising to victory. Hoestra leads Durant 51 percent to 27 percent. 15 percent of voters remain undecided.

Durant has been attacking Hoesktra recently on television, as has a pro-Durant super PAC. But a week out from the election, he faces a huge gap.

Furthermore, 33 percent of those surveyed say they haven't heard of Durant or have no opinion of him. Just 11 percent say the same about Hoekstra, who has run statewide before (in an unsuccessful 2010 gubernatorial bid).

The poll surveyed 800 registered and likely primary voters from July 28-29. The margin of error was plus-or-minus 3.5 percentage points.

In a separate EPIC-MRA survey on the general election, 49 percent support Sen. Debbie Stabenow in a potential matchup with Hoekstra. 35 percent favor the former congressman. Meanwhile, 48 percent support President Obama, while 42 percent support Mitt Romney. The poll, conducted for the Detroit Free Press, WXYZ-TV, WOOD-TV, WILX-TV and WJRT-TV, surveyed 600 active and likely November voters from July 24-31. The margin of error was plus-or-minus 4 percentage points.
