If she wins the Democratic nomination Saturday, Hirono likely will meet former Gov. Linda Lingle, who faces only nominal competition in the GOP primary. Lingle defeated Hirono in the 2002 gubernatorial election, but the Republican is a decided underdog in the general election, thanks to Hawaii's heavy Democratic leaning and President Obama's popularity in his home state. The Hirono internal poll was conducted July 30 through August 1 by the Benenson Strategy Group. The survey has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4.4 percentage points.
