Democratic House Candidate Corrects Bio After Inquiry

California state Assemblyman Jared Huffman, the Democratic nominee for California's 2nd District House seat, included misleading information in his campaign biography about his involvement with the USA Men's National Volleyball Team, according to fact-checking by National Journal.

Huffman's campaign biography stated that he was a member of the "World Champion USA Volleyball Team in 1987." However, the World Championship games took place in September and October of 1986, before Huffman joined the team in 1987.

Marv Dunphy, the coach of the U.S. National Volleyball Team from 1985 to 1988, confirmed that Huffman was not a part of the Pan American Games in 1987 or the World Championships in 1986, but that he did participate in the USA Volleyball program in 1987. An article from the USA Volleyball Foundation's newsletter says Huffman won the silver medal at the NORCECA Championships that year.

After an inquiry by National Journal about his biography, Huffman revised the information to say, "Jared Huffman was a member of the USA Volleyball Team in 1987 when the team was ranked No. 1 in the world."

Huffman elaborated in an email, saying his biography would now read in part: "Jared Huffman joined the USA Volleyball Team in January of 1987 and spent approximately seven months training and competing with the team. Huffman was a backup player, but it was nonetheless a significant accomplishment to be part of a team that included some of the best players in the world at the time ..." Having won the primary in June, Huffman is likely to easily win election to the House in the heavily Democratic district on the state's northern coast.
