Charlie Crist, the former Republican governor of Florida, is supporting Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson's reelection campaign.
Crist told the Associated Press Wednesday that he will attend an upcoming Nelson fundraiser, which is being headlined by Bill Clinton. Crist said he is backing Nelson over Rep. Connie Mack, the likely GOP nominee, because Nelson is a friend and a good voice for Florida.
Crist left the GOP during his 2010 Senate bid once it became clear that now-Sen. Marco Rubio likely would defeat him in the GOP primary. Crist ran as an independent in the general election but lost badly to Rubio.
The endorsement of Nelson will intensify speculation among Florida political observers that Crist might attempt a political comeback as a Democrat.
