Berkley's Pro-Heller Backdrop

August 16, 2012

Harsh talk and hecklers have made an impact on the campaign scene this week, but supporters of GOP Sen. Dean Heller effectively ruined a rally his opponent Shelley Berkley held this week by simply showing up.

Berkley intended to use the backdrop of Reno's Social Security Administration building to add emphasis to her charges that Republican plans would hurt the program, but a swelling crowd of Heller supporters overflowed onto the building's grounds, the Las Vegas Sun reported. Because political events can't take place on federal grounds, security guards moved the rally to a sidewalk in front of the building.

Berkley still gave her speech -- albeit with heavy traffic nearby almost drowning her out -- but the wall of Heller signs behind her probably wasn't the optic she was aiming for. After reporters questioned the location of her event, she responded, "It'll never happen again!"
