Akin Attacks McCaskill in New TV Ad

Missouri GOP Senate nominee Todd Akin shifted to offense Wednesday, launching a television ad that ties Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill to President Obama and attempts to shift focus what he terms his "six-second mistake" to the senator's "six-year record."

"My six-second mistake is well-known," says Akin. "But Claire McCaskill's six-year record is something you should know." Akin says McCaskill has voted with Obama 98 percent of the time, "cast the deciding vote to pass Obamacare," and voted for the "budget-busting stimulus spending."

He also hits her for failing to pay taxes on her private plane, saying that she "raised our taxes but didn't pay her own."

The congressman concludes that the election is about "saving our country."

It's a somewhat unusual attack ad, with Akin delivering the message personally while looking into the camera. But with the National Republican Senatorial Committee and Crossroads GPS pulling out of the state, Akin may need to get used to attacking his opponent himself.

Akin's previous television spot was an apology for his hugely controversial comments on "legitimate" rape.

Akin's previous television spot was an apology for his hugely controversial comments on "legitimate" rape. "None of the spin from Todd Akin will change the fact that he's simply too far out of the mainstream," said McCaskill spokesperson Erik Dorey. "Todd Akin would privatize Social Security and Medicare, end federal student loans, and get rid of the minimum wage. Ranked the most moderate US Senator, Claire has forged compromises between parties to protect these important safety nets for Missouri families because, first and foremost, she's on our side."
