Former Charlotte Republican Mayor Pat McCrory raised an impressive $2.2 million+ during the second quarter, his gubernatorial campaign announced on Monday. He finished the period with nearly $4.4 million in the bank.
McCrory is the frontrunner in the race to succeed retiring Gov. Bev Perdue in North Carolina. Perdue defeated him by three points in 2008. The Democratic nominee this time is Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton. Dalton has not yet released his second quarter number.
While most observers regard McCrory as the odds-on favorite in the race, a late June NBC News/Marist poll showed a neck-and-neck race between the Republican and Dalton.
