While North Dakota Democrat Heidi Heitkamp is staying away from her party's national convention in Charlotte, her Republican Senate opponent, Rep. Rick Berg, plans to be in Tampa later this year for the Republican National Convention.
"Rick supports Governor Romney and, schedule permitting, plans to attend at least a portion of the convention and support North Dakota delegates," Berg spokesman Chris Van Guilder told Hotline On Call. "Grassroots organization is at the heart of our campaign, and as a delegate, it has always been Rick's intention to allow grassroots leaders from North Dakota that are alternate-delegates the opportunity to take his spot so they can participate and experience this important process."
Romney is a heavy favorite to win North Dakota, which makes linking himself to the GOP presidential nominee-in-waiting a wise proposition for Berg. Heitkamp can't afford to be tethered to President Obama in the same way.
