Carmona Planning to Skip Dem Convention

Updated at 7:10 p.m.

Presumptive Arizona Democratic Senate nominee Richard Carmona does not plan to attend the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., while the Republican frontrunner, Rep. Jeff Flake, has not decided whether he will attend his party's national convention in Tampa, Fla.

Carmona spokesman Andy Barr told Hotline On Call the former surgeon general does not currently plan to go to Charlotte, while Flake campaign spokesman Andrew Wilder noted that the Tampa convention overlaps with the state's primary date.

"Arizona's primary election day is on August 28 this year, which comes during the convention. Jeff Flake's priority is the primary election, so anything to do with the convention is TBD," said Wilder. Flake faces businessman Wil Cardon in the GOP race. Cardon spokeswoman Alyssa Pivirotto said Cardon "is going to attend the convention in Tampa after the primary on August 28th."

The Democratic Convention Carmona is skipping is slated for Sept. 3-6, the first full week of his general election campaign.
