Sen. Thomas Carper, D-Del., will officially file paperwork to run for a third term on Friday, a person familiar with Carper's thinking tells National Journal, putting to rest some early morning uncertainty about his future plans.
Carper's campaign offered up a vague tweet early on Friday, indicating he would make an "important announcement," in the afternoon, but nothing more.
"Good morning everyone! Be sure to check back in at 2 pm for an important announcement from Sen. Carper!" Carper's campaign tweeted.
When asked whether Carper might have been hinting at a retirement announcement, a person familiar with his thinking quickly swatted down the possibility.
"He is NOT retiring," said the person familiar with Carper's plans. "That is absurd. He is running. We're filing today. That's all."
Earlier this week, Alexander Pires Jr., a wealthy attorney who owns many popular nightspots in Dewey Beach announced that he is challenging Carper as an independent.
Carper is among the safest Senate Democrats running for reelection this cycle.
