Why Lugar is in Trouble in Indiana

If you're looking for insight into why many Indiana Republicans now privately concede that Republican Sen. Richard Lugar is probably going to fall to Treasurer Richard Mourdock in the May 8 GOP primary, pick up a copy of Wednesday's Washington Times. You'll find an op-ed written by Lugar criticizing the Obama administration's handling of the sale of weapons to friendly foreign governments.

Locked in a heated campaign for his political survival, the choice of subject and publication for a Lugar op-ed is downright odd. Rather than writing a piece on a topic on the minds of Hoosier votes, like jobs or gas prices, for the Indianapolis Star or another local paper, Lugar addresses an issue that few voters follow in a publication that no more than a small percentage of Indiana Republicans read.

The Lugar campaign blasted out a link to the op-ed at the top of a press release issued on Wednesday.
