Democratic Primary in New Queens District Heating Up

Weiner resigned from Congress following a lurid sexting scandal. Turner this year is running for the Senate, and the old Weiner district was effectively eliminated in redistricting. This year's three-way primary battle for the new 6th District also includes Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley, the cousin of Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley. Despite their blood ties, Crowley, the chairman of the Queens Democratic Party, has joined those who are backing Meng. In his letter to supporters on Wednesday endorsing Meng, Weprin writes that she would continue the tradition of leadership and service to constituents of the area set by Ackerman, and that she is a "wonderful person and skilled legislator who will be a strong voice for New York in Washington. Weprin's brother, Councilman Mark Weprin, has also endorsed Meng.
