Raye Not Running for Senate in Maine

Maine Republican state Senate President Kevin Raye won't run for retiring GOP Sen. Olympia Snowe's seat, he announced on Friday. Instead, he will remain in the 2nd District race against Democratic Rep. Mike Michaud.

"It has been an extraordinary two and a half days since Olympia Snowe announced her unexpected retirement from the U.S. Senate," Raye said in a statement, according to the Bangor Daily News. "During that time, my wife Karen and I have been overwhelmed by the many kind expressions of support and encouragement we have received from friends and supporters across Maine. After careful consideration, I have decided to remain a candidate for the 2nd District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives."

On Thursday, Michaud ended speculation over his own plans by announcing that he will run for reelection in the 2nd District, a decision that raises the possibility that 1st District Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree will run for the Senate.
