Pro-Lugar Super PAC Slams Chocola

Updated at 1:46 p.m.

Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind., is running against state Treasurer Richard Mourdock in the GOP primary. But a new TV ad from a pro-Lugar super PAC targets Club For Growth President Chris Chocola as much as it slams Lugar's actual opponent.

"Ex-Hoosier Congressman Chris Chocola's Club For Growth and Mourdock attack our senator, Dick Lugar, saying his conservatism isn't pure," says the narrator of the spot launched by Hoosiers for Economic Growth And Jobs.

"In Congress, Chocola supported the largest Medicare expansion ever, minimum wage increases, dozens of earmarks," the narrator continues.

A source tracking the buy says that the group is spending about $100,000 to air the ad in the Indianapolis area.

"So let's get this straight. A Super PAC is attacking another Super PAC for being a 'special interest,' and attacking a former congressman who is not a candidate in the race. Sounds about as confusing as trying to figure out which state Dick Lugar lives in. Good luck with that. Ask former Senator Bob Bennett how that worked out for him, responded Club spokesman Barney Keller. It's no secret that there is no love lost between Lugar allies and Chocola. And the point of the ad is to portray Mourdock as an ally of a former Indiana congressman with a flawed record who heads a D.C.-based operation. But it's not often that you see that much TV ad space dedicated to criticizing an individual who is not even on the ballot.
